Book Reviews

Ship Breaker

In the fiction novel, Ship Breaker, by Paolo Bacigalupi, the main character Nailer lives a hard working, taxing and poverty stricken life of ship breaking; stripping valuable metals from sunken ships filled with dangerous fumes.

Nailer has lived all his years as an under fed crew boy who works all day in the ship breaking yeards and goes back home to his crystal sliding, extremely deadly and violent father whom is feared by most on the island. Through out the story Nailer’s luck, due to what his people called ‘ The Fates’ begins to rise greatly, eventually finding him self ,and his best friend Pima, tangled up with a tremendously rich girl, Nita, whom they find almost dead in her sunken clipper ship full of goods and riches. The rest of the story revolves around the vital desision nailer makes to either kill off this ‘swank’ girl , take all her gold and live the remainder of his life hiding  this ‘lucky strike’ with Pima from the people, or to keep her alive and see what kind of trouble and misfortune she may bring to him.

In this twisted story line told from a third point of view, the author makes a point of every single outcome in the novel revolving around the scarce trait of loyalty. Throughout the story, Paolo Bacigalupi shows the read how Nailer’s loyalty will benefit him or sentence him to an even greater amount of misfortune and hard luck.

I really enjoyed this book, especially because of its constant change of atmosphere from friendship and happiness, to betrayal and dishonesty to battle and bloodshed. It is mixed with funny, dramatic and action packed moments that all made the Ship Breaker an enjoyable read.

I recommend this book to anyone who likes crazy and unexpected turns in plot, it is also a moderately fast reed, so if you don’t enjoy books that get to the point very gradually, then this book would also be for you!

Ship Breaker

So far this is an exciting novel, even though I am only on page 65, there is already lots of plot twists, action, betrayal and conflicts. Just the kind of book I would like :D
